Plans to widen Chapala-Ajijic Hwy? Print E-mail

For weeks there have been surveyors on the main highway from San Antonio on past Rancho del Oro. Are there plans to widen the highway through the village?  When I first moved here ten years ago this was attempted and all the shop owners protested so they stopped the widening at the Ajijic Clinic.

Editor's Response:
One of the surveyors interviewed by the Reporter this week said that he is working for the Federal Communications and Transportation Ministry (SCT). The assignment is to take measurements that will serve as the basis for drawing up a plan to widen the highway to four lanes running all the way from Chapala to Jocotepec. The study will help determine if a four lane strip through the center of Ajijic is feasible or whether an alternate route will be required for that segment. The young man indicated that the agency may take at least another year to compile data and design the project. He noted that the survey work has been slow going due to visual obstructions caused by the steady flow of daytime traffic.
