The latest James Bond film begins in classic Bond fashion, the opening credits a retro-flavored animated sequence of sharp (and abstractly bloody) design, accompanied by a grandiose pop soundtrack. Watching old Bond flicks, those opening songs often sound very dated -- think Sheena Easton, or Carly Simon. The new "Casino Royale" song, "You Know My Name," has the distinct advantage of sounding dated already. Somebody tell singer Chris Cornell that it isn't 1991 anymore. |

I didn't expect "United 93" to be bad; I just wasn't sure I wanted to watch it. I moved to New York City on September 10, 2001, just in time to witness the surreally tragic devastation of the following morning. I found myself wandering smoke-filled streets with a camera that became harder to lift with each crying, dust-covered pedestrian that I passed. I remember too clearly the confusion, the fear, the skittish maneuvering and upward glances every time a military jet buzzed overhead - even the directionally challenged New Yorkers arguing over just where they were, lost without the guiding benefits of a functioning public transportation system. And the grief, which was a punch to the gut with every "missing" flyer that some unreasonably hopeful spouse or relative hung on telephone poles and public pay phones. Why relive that? |

My expectations were low for this sequel to "Curse of the Black Pearl" and I'm happy to report the film met them all. Actually, my expectations were fairly low for that first "Pirates of the Caribbean" flick too, but in that case the movie exceeded them. That first movie was rollicking Disney adventure fun, and Johnny Depp's performance, commonly and accurately described as channeling a drunk, gay Keith Richards, was hilarious and completely unexpected. The ghostly bad-guy pirates were creepy and the story was just strong enough that it all came together for a very satisfying experience. That's a tough act to follow for any sequel, not to mention a sequel to a movie based on an amusement park ride. |

Despite the best efforts of critics at the Cannes Film Festival and certain factions within the Catholic Church, "The Da Vinci Code" is a cinematic event of – ok, ok, I'll say it – biblical proportions. Sony opened the much-anticipated flick at venues worldwide this past weekend in about a zillion theaters, and audiences flocked in droves – making "Da Vinci" one of the top opening weekend grosses internationally, ever. |
