'As if Thanksgiving wasn't quite enough, hungry visitors could also flock to Tlaquepaque this week for the first ever Feria de Tortas y Birria. That's right, an entire festival dedicated to meat and Jalisco-style sandwiches stuffed with carnitas and other tidbits. To celebrate the occasion, organizers sponsored the creation of the longest ever torta line, just waiting to be doused in salsa.

'To promote tourism and draw in the crowds, Tlaquepaque's government is sponsoring street festivals on the second and fourth Friday of every month. Expect boisterous noise, as dancers, mariachis and bands fill the streets and restaurants and stores stay open late for business. Festivities begin at 8 p.m. in the Plaza Springfield (named after Tlaquepaque's sister city), on Independencia, by the Niños Heroes monument. While there are few hotels in Tlaquepaque, there are several bed and breakfasts for visitors who prefer not to drive home after the night's festivities. Check, for example, Casa de las Flores, a centrally-located B&B run by biingual hosts. Visit their website at www.casadelasflores.com or call 3659-3186.

'This weekend's edition of the annual Hare Krishna parade was a nice break from protests. Guadalajara's small but boisterous community in the practice, descended from yoga and Hindu religion, sang, chanted and danced their way through the streets.

'Patricia Olarte (second from L) in the guise of La Catrina brings together the best of two hollidays – Halloween and Day of the Dead – at the combined Amsoc and American Legion Post Three Halloween party last Saturday. Olarte also nabbed first prize in the costume contest (Reggie Soileau, in full surgical regalia, took second place).
