The Republic today marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Mexico’s only Nobel Laureate for Literature, Octavio Paz, poet, writer, diplomat, and preeminent explicator of Mexican culture and psyche. The Los Angeles Times correctly said Wednesday: “It would be difficult to overstate Paz’s impact on Mexican culture, politics and thought in the second half of the 20th century.” Paz’s far-reaching intellect helped define Mexican culture and identity to the world community at a time when this country was still viewed by many as a bandit-ridden backwater. |
