'DIGGING DEEP--After receiving word that the Secretariat of the Navy is
prepared to begin excavating Chapala's lake front in September, the
municipal government last week brought in heavy machinery to dig out a
space on the beach where the naval dredge is to be assembled. The huge
pit, measuring 40 meters by 40 meters and two and a half meters in
depth, is located in front of the Chapala post office. With a green
light from the Navy, city officials are now hustling to wrap up the
environmental impact study and detailed technical plans required to
get the dredging project approved by other state and federal agencies.
