Mexicans heading north to the United States usually arrive with little except a willingness to work hard and an entrepreneurial attitude. Drawing on what they know and recognizing a business opportunity, some enterprising migrants open taco stands in public areas that serve up hot cheap fare, which is popular with Mexican laborers. It can be a lucrative business: a successful taco stand in Guadalajara is reputedly a gold mine. The migrant-owned taco stands usually conform to local regulations and undergo health department inspections, which are no doubt more rigorous than those here in Mexico. |

Thanks to a proportional representation system known as plurinominal, the recent federal elections ushered another loathsome batch of politicians into the Congress and Senate. And perhaps no politician in the group is more loathsome than Jorge Emilio Gonzalez Martinez, a.k.a. Niño Verde (Green Child), flag bearer for the Partido Verde Ecologista de Mexico (PVEM or Green Party), a minor player on Mexico's political scene that frequently acts in anything but an environmentally-conscious manner. |

The July 2 election revealed several different Mexicos, which voted according to regional preferences, not unlike countries such as Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, where the main political parties claim local power bases and often fail to win nationwide support. |
