VIEWPOINT: Dull President? Not On Your Life

Vicente Fox took over the presidency of Mexico in December 2000, bringing down the curtain on 70 years of one-party rule. Many voters believed they had elected exactly the right person to shake this country out of its perpetual mediocrity and put it firmly on the path to first-world nation status. They felt Mexico finally had a dynamic leader who could make his presence felt both at home and abroad, someone who with a wave of a wand could end endemic corruption, lift Mexico out of the mire of poverty and ensure jobs and prosperity for all.

Supreme Court To Rule On Law Favoring Televisa And TV Azteca

A Mexican Supreme Court justice on April 30 circulated a "draft decision" among fellow justices, government agencies and legislators, aimed at overturning "unconstitutional" articles of a media law passed during the presidential campaign of 2006. That law openly favored Mexico's two communication giants, Televisa and TV Azteca – shredding announced governmental pledges to democratize the nation's media.

Item: JP Morgan forecast April 23 that Mexico's economy will expand this year at its slowest pace-2.8 percent-since 2003 because of a contraction in industrial production in the first quarter.

Ode To Mexico: A Canadian's Opinion Of Life Down South

Much has been made in recent years of how dangerous it is to travel to Mexico. Well, I not only travel there but this past year I spent five months living there at the condo my husband and I purchased in Puerto Vallarta in February 2003. Admittedly, I am biased towards Mexico, having lived on their Gulf Coast for two years in the mid-80s when my husband's work took us to the state of Veracruz. We made many friends and had such wonderful experiences that life has never been the same since. I often think that in some ways it was the best thing that ever happened to me, while in others it was one of the worst.
