George W. Bush's mistakes with the English language are famous. There is even a website called "Bushisms of the week." The press has been generous with his gaffes in Spanish and has given him an "A" for his efforts. To be sure, he has made some mistakes in Spanish, which clearly call to mind those of his native language. For example, during the 2000 election he asked an audience for their botas (boots) instead of votos (votes).

I bumped into a Brit in Puerto Vallarta this week. I knew he was a Brit because he was wearing shin-high black socks and Hush Puppies on the beach. He had also draped a handkerchief over his head to protect him from the sun and was clutching a dogeared Agatha Christie novel as beer dribbled down his jovial, red face.

With this in mind, residents of the Lake Chapala area will be keeping their fingers crossed that a recent pow-wow between Mexican President Vicente Fox and Jalisco Governor Francisco Ramirez brings some much-needed cheer for ailing Lake Chapala.
