Swtizerland Can Teach US Much About The Importance Of Languages

Although the events of 9-11 clearly proved that what happens in far away places such as Afghanistan directly affects the United States, when it comes to language, our country continues to march on the belief that one language is enough to communicate with the rest of the world. This year Iowa became the 27th state to declare English its official language.

Erosion of certain freedoms of expression was one of the fears libertarians had when the Partido Accion Nacional (PAN) started to gain real power in Mexico in the mid 1990s. Since its foundation in the 1930s the PAN has always maintained strong ties to the church and the party's preachings have consistently been tinged with a moralistic tone.

VIEWPOINT: Changed Attitude Toward US Consulate?

What a difference a decade makes. In March 1991, the U.S. State Department informed U.S. Ambassador to Mexico John Negroponte that he would have to cut operational costs in Mexico by 12 percent. Rather than nibble away at the three consulates in Monterrey, Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana, the ambassador and his aides decided that closing the U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara would be the most satisfactory solution to the budget dilemma.
