Can Campesinos Tough It Out?

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is being opposed by small farmers here on a purely ideological basis, according to author and commentator Sergio Sarmiento in a recent column published in Guadalajara daily Mural. This argument seems disingenuous to those familiar with the plight of Mexican family farmers.

Despite the attractions of Jocotepec's biggest annual fiesta (see story this page), many merchants, cantineros and vendors of streetside food, carnival rides, games, novelties, toys and arrays of merchandise that defy inventory are complaining that the normal inflow of north-of-the-border compatriotas has not yet appeared.
