Sadly, the Olympics Games are no longer the greatest high-principled sporting event on earth but more of a freak show, sold to corporate sponsors, plagued by cheats, used by scheming politicians, and hosted by imprudent cities that burden their inhabitants with debt for decades to come.

We were sorry to hear about the difficulty one of Allyn Hunt’s
acquaintances had with our new appointment system for U.S. passports,
and disappointed that he drew on this experience to condemn the program
as contributing to the “distancing” of the American community from U.S.
Government services (May 10-16 “South of North” column).
