Mexican Interest In MLB Playoffs
Saturday, 04 October 2003
Five Mexican players are figuring prominently in this season's Major League Baseball playoffs -- and all have contributed to the success of their teams this year. Vinicio Castillo of the Atlanta Braves hit 22 home runs, Antonio Osuna struck out 47 in 50 and two thirds innings of pitching for the Yankees and Karim Garcia ended the season with a .262 batting average, also for the Yankees. Two Mexicans are on the Oakland Athletics's roster: Ricardo Rincon ended the season with a .230 ERA and Erubiel Durazo had 77 RBIs. And although he did not make it to the playoffs, Chicago White Sox pitcher Esteban Loaiza brought his team close while tying Fernando Valenzuela's 1986 record for the most pitching victories in a season by a Mexican -- 21 wins. That still places him in position to compete for the Cy Young award.

Although Westerhof coached only modest teams in his homeland, in the late 1970s he was on the staff of the trophy-winning Ajax Amsterdam team which boasted world stars such as Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten.
