Bobby Carlsen passed away Friday, February 8, while en-route to Phoenix on an emergency flight. A valuable member of the Casa volunteer group, she spent many hours making quilts for each of the children as they became part of the Casa Hogar family. A continual and generous donor to the Casa of gifts of food, she was a vital and lovely lady who will be sorely missed by her many friends in Manzanillo, her family in the United States and her sick husband in Guadalajara.
 
Expat Foundation Helps Area Families

Several organizations to assist the local adults and children of Manzanillo and surrounding districts have been developed over the years by visitors and friends from the north. One such is the Santiago Foundation. Robert J. Johnson, Geraldine Johnson and Dr Luis Bejar started this non-profit organization in the mid-1980s, with the purchase of a house in Santiago in co-operation with the Church. Ing. Juan Culin, Ruth Joseph and Sharon Hull joined them in 1985 and together with various fundraisers and private donations they were able to commence the planned work of the centre.

The proclaimed "Sailfish Capital of the World" Manzanillo, held its 46th Annual Sports Fishing Tournament over the weekend, February 2 to 4. A total of 35 fishing boats and 95 avid fishermen cast lines in the hope of landing "the big one." The rules for the contest are strict and persons infringing these rules are not only disqualified but may be banned from future tournaments. These rules include fish-weight minimums: Sailfish, 20 kilograms (kgs.); Marlin, 40 kgs.; Dorado kgs. and Tuna kgs. Each fisherman may present one fish per day in each category.
 
Big Breakfast Served In Barra

William and Julie-Ruth Ziener recenty hosted a party for 800 children in Barra de Navidad at Miguel Lopez de Legazpi Elementary School. A small army of ladies chopped, sliced, diced and cooked as two stalwart men roasted two pigs for the monstrous meal.
 
10-day Carnaval Starts Sunday

For the first time in the history of the 42-year-old event, the annual Barra de Navidad Carnaval will have a deep-sea fishing tournament as part of its activities for 2002.
