POSTCARD FROM MANZANILLO: Large Crowd At Gallery Opening
Saturday, 23 November 2002

It was impossible to tell exactly how many guests attended the grand opening of the Galeria Intento as there seemed to be a continual flow of people coming and going throughout the evening. Two musicians, Davide Nicole, a violin virtuoso from Italy along with Simone Iannarelli on guitar, both faculty members of the University of Colima, played throughout the evening, finally accompanying Robert Hill on the patio as he worked on a new painting. Owner Maria Corona hosted the event.

With a storm warning in effect, the final slate of fishermen participating in this year's International Sailfish Tournament was much lower than anticipated. Although the storm never materialized, the damage was done and only 120 lines were registered for the contest, dropping significantly from over 200 contestants in previous years.

Once again it has been proven why Manzanillo is such a valuable asset to Mexico as Hurricane Kenna passed our port city and moved on up the coast. Although it was predicted that Kenna would land, she chose to avoid us, as have all the other hurricanes of this year. All that Manzanillenses had to cope with were high waves and intensive tropical rains which continued on and off during Thursday and Friday of last week. The problems encountered by other towns along the coast, including Barra de Navidad and Cihuatlan did not affect us here. On Sunday, with an intense blue sky and a calm sea (with a mass of debris at the edge), it was as if nothing had happened.

The road to Puerta Vallarta from Manzanillo twists and turns for 250-plus kilometers, occasionally allowing a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean with a sign post now and again indicating a turn off to the left with hotels, beaches or restaurants. Bridges cross dozens of rivers, most of which are dry-out of the rainy season-others too far down a ravine to see if there is even a stream.
