Locals Work To Save Turtles In Nayarit

Turtle eggs and tourism were on the minds of about 25 area property owners gathered together the evening of February 5 at the home of Phil Price and Susan Drexler, overlooking Punta Negra Beach. They came to hear the progress of the local turtle preservation efforts of Ruben Efrain Davolos Flores of La Cruz and his friend Gilberto Galindo Castro who lives in Litibu.

The canoe slips through the dark mangroves where lilies and butterflies speckle the shadows with yellow, blue and green light. Porfirio Carillo, 25, expertly maneuvers the craft though a narrow passageway in the dense grove and out into a wide estuary where waterfowl hunt the shallow, brackish water for abundant shrimp. Carillo and his partner Ignacio Lopez point out osprey, egret, and even the elusive quetzal to their tour groups, naming each species first in Spanish, then in their native Huichol.

This year's International Festival de Bahia de Banderas features a lineup of activities sure to interest everyone. There are sporting events for participants and spectators, a whale photo contest, a ceviche competition and plenty of entertainment.
 
Writers Workshop Well Attended By Area Groups

In a spirit of camaraderie and respect, the second annual Puerto Vallarta Writer's Weekend Workshop began Friday evening, February 2 with a welcome from convenor Dan Grippo followed by a wine and cheese reception at the International Friendship Club. This year's workshop strived to generate a regional feel, networking and sharing ideas with members of the writers groups from Mazatlan, San Miguel de Allende and Ajijic.
 
Becas Goes All Out On 45th Anniversary

The Westin Resort and Spa Hotel will be transformed for Dazzle in the Starlight, the 45th Anniversayy of the Becas Ball, coordinated by Michael Schultz of Kitkat. Loudspeakers will play romantic music under the direction of a professional DJ. An open dance area will ensure dancers have room to show off their skills.
