The announcement is enough to stymie even more advanced language students: responding to accusations that the telenovela title "Las Estupidas No Van al Cielo" (Stupid girls don't go to heaven) was aggressive and offensive, the Televisa network decided to clean up the soap's title for family viewing. The title will now be "Las Tontas No Van al Cielo." Yes, Spanish students, that's right: they're replacing the word estupida (as in stupid) with the word tonta (as in fool … or stupid).

Students of etymology – the study of historical change as applied to individual words – are frequently enchanted by the wealth of indigenous Mexican words which have infiltrated the Castilian tongue. Words such as chocolate and guacamole have been adopted not only into Spanish but also into English. Less well-known ones such as elote (sweetcorn) or guaraches (sandals) have also successfully crossed cultural time barriers.
