CASA champs

The Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) started out the New Year with members showing off their cooking skills in Moroccan and Middle Eastern main dishes and fruit and nut desserts.

Wayne Palfrey won the first category for his Spicy Chicken Pot. Diane Pretti placed second and also won the People’s Choice award for her Moroccan Lamb Tangine and Pat Carroll won the third place for his Moroccan Meatball Stew.

Recipes in the dessert category had to include fruit, nuts and a liquor. Mary Ann Waite won first place and the People’s Choice Award for her Figgy Pudding Cheesecake with Port Sauce. Second place went to Karen Rowell for her Chocolate Amaretto Almond Apricot Pie and Ken Caldwell took third place for his Cranberry Lime Tart.

While the judges made their choices based on taste and presentation, world-renowned chef Alex Sgroi gave a talk on food trends for 2010. He spoke about the reasons to eat locally and what is right for the season, and also made the observation that there is a trend to hold more small dinner parties in homes instead of going to expensive restaurants.

All who would like to join in learning about, preparing and enjoying good food are encouraged to call CASA President Patrick Winn at 766-4842 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . He would be delighted to invite those interested to come as his guest.

Always

Jayme Littlejohn, producer of My, My, How Nice! Productions, is reprising the show “Always-Patsy Cline” because, he says, so many people were unable to catch it last time around. Performances will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 22, 23 and 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Sol y Luna Center, Rio Bravo 10A on the west end of Ajijic.

The cast will remain the same, with Timothy G. Ruff Welch as the music director and “Tim Bob,” Patteye Simpson as Patsy Cline and Littlejohn as Louise Seeger.

The bar will open one hour before each performance and tickets are available for 200 pesos at Diane Pearl Colecciones and at Suzy’s Consignment Shop. The email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

A portion of the proceeds will go to Centro Regionales Estudios Musicales (CREM).

Artist shows

The sculptor known as “Rainer” will lead a group of more than 50 artists in an exhibition February 13 and 14, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on both days, at the new Centro Laguna Mall, located on the corner of the Libramiento and Chapala-Jocotepec highway. Well-known artists from Guadalajara and lakeside will be featured, including Efren Gonzalez, Rommy Guevara, Carlos Real Ramos, Liz Skelsey, Xill Fessenden, Daniel Palma, Rocio Coffeen, Gabriel Colunga, Pina Camarena, Liusa Julian, Estela Hidalgo, Javier Ramos, Enrique Loza, Claudia Nery, Sonia Marti and Antonio Lopez Vega. The artwork will cover the complete panoply of the plastic arts, and, in addition, there will be a sideshow feature Son Cuba, a Latino music ensemble, salsa dancing, a special food offering by the Chili Bang Bar, tequila tasting and food art demonstrations by students of the Culinary Institute of Guadalajara. Don’t miss what promises to be a monumental event!
