Dancers

The award-winning Ballet Folklorico Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos will grace the stage of Auditorio de Riberas del Lago in La Floresta on Sunday, February 7 at noon. The dance group is well-known for its lavish and authentic costuming, as well as “rescuing” authentic but endangered dances from all over Mexico. The group is backed up with live music by Mariachi Aguila de Chapala and Grupo Lirio.

The troupe participated in a national dance congress in Puerto Vallarta a few months ago (the dancers were chosen by the state to represent Jalisco), which resulted in invitations to dance in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Merida. Though their room and board will be paid for on their tour, they are currently raising money to pay for their transportation.

This group is well worth the 100-peso ticket (purchased at the auditorium or at SuperLake Market) and the time to see them perform. If you can’t make it on February 7, you’ll have another opportunity on March 7. You’ll want to see one or the other – or maybe both. The programs will not be the same on the two dates.

Always

Since so many people weren’t able to catch it on the last go-round, Jayme Littlejohn, the producer of My, My, How Nice! Productions, is reprising “Always – Patsy Cline.” Performances will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February 22, 23 and 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Sol y Luna Center, Rio Bravo 10A on the west end of Ajijic.

The cast will remain the same, with Timothy G. Ruff Welch as the music director and “Tim Bob,” Patteye Simpson as Patsy Cline and Littlejohn as Louise Seeger.

The bar will open one hour before each performance and tickets are available for 200 pesos at Diane Pearl Colecciones and at Suzy’s Consignment Shop. The email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Triplets

A reception Saturday, February 6, 4-6 p.m. will mark the opening of three exhibitions at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the Ajijic Plaza. Jesus Lopez Vega will show “Realism Magico,” featuring vivid colors and a Wixarika (Huichol) influence. He will present a sincretic world, heavy on pre-Colombian and Christian imagery, with satiric and symbolic themes. Lopez Vega will take this opportunity to introduce the watercolor work of his students in the Lake Chapala Society’s Children’s Art Program. Nine-year-old Karina Gutierrez also works in prismcolor pencils and print making in Plexiglas. She will show ten pieces.

Pat Apt, an Ajijic resident since 1992, works in a figurative style. The exhibit is entitled “When Mexico Sings.” Her work has been exhibited in the United States and around Mexico.

The reception will feature live music and cocktails.

Sopranos

The Music Appreciation Society (MAS) presents Mexican opera stars Liliana del Conde, Mariana del Rocio Corona and Zaire Soria on Tuesday, February 9, 7:30 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. The program will include songs from many favorite musicals, as well as arias from “Madame Butterfly,” “La Boheme,” “Turandot,” “La Traviata,” “Tosca,” “La Rodine” and more.

Tickets are 250 pesos and are on sale at the Lake Chapala Society Tickets, Etc. booth from 10 a.m. to noon and at Charter Club Tours.

La Bella Vida

Nancy Gray opens her exhibit in the magic garden of La Bella Vida on Friday, January 29, 3-6 p.m. Gray will be giving demonstrations of her technique from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Gray’s work is in a European 18th Century style with a brilliant Mexican pallet. Do see it! La Bella Vida is located at Calle 16 de Septiembre #4b in the heart of Ajijic.

VIVA funds

”Wink, Wink, It’s Lip Sync,” the popular fundraiser show sponsored last week by VIVA la Musica!, raised 91,000 pesos. Half of that amount will go to the VIVA Educational Grant Fund and half will go toward improvements at the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago.

VIVA membership

Once again, VIVA la Musica! will be throwing a party and free concert for members on Sunday, February 21. The cost of admission will be your 2010 annual membership fee. (If you already have your 2010 membership card, you get in free.)

The party will be on the grounds of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar. Violin students of Christopher Wilshere – they are competing in a violin competition in Guadalajara the following day – will give a concert in the church. The party starts at 3:30 p.m. Come one, come all and bring a friend who would also like to join up.

Bus trips

Some seats are still available for VIVA bus trips. Tickets are 200 pesos for VIVA members and 250 pesos for non-members. VIVA will arrange to have dinner at a good restaurant in Guadalajara before the Friday evening concerts.
