Dos Lunas

“Uncommon Women, Common Ground” is the theme of a collective exhibition opening at Dos Lunas Gallery, Colon 13 in Ajijic, on Friday, January 15, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will feature four women artists who have made Lakeside the inspiration for their creativity. They are Judy Dykstra-Brown, Xill Fessenden, Gloria Palazzo and Linda Richards. This is going to be a doozy! Don’t miss.

Watercolor show

Local watercolorist Ed Burke shows off his latest work on Saturday, January 16, 4-7 p.m. in the garden of Paseo del Lago 85 in La Floresta. He’ll be displaying both originals and prints. Wine and refreshments will be served. The theme of the show will be “What a Wonderful World.”

The Bard

Put on your kilt (only if you have one!) and make your reservations for the annual “Robbie Burns Birthday Ceilidh” sponsored by Los Cantantes del Lago. The bash planned for Monday, January 25, has two seatings: 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. There will be haggis (sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet and spices – everyone’s favorite), a toast to “The Bard” and a Toast to the Lassies.

Scottish country dancing takes place between the two seatings, so you can eat first and then dance, or dance first and then eat. It’s great fun and is a sure sell-out.

Tickets are 250 pesos. They can be purchased from any member of Los Cantantes or by calling Jan Feise at 766-2691 or emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Art and fleas

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) holds its Art Show and Sale, along with its annual flea market, on Sunday, January 17, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Ajijic Plaza. Don’t miss i

Teaching art

Local artist Dimitar Krustev will give an illustrated Power Point lecture on the subject of “The Art of Teaching Art” on Thursday, January 14 in the Neill James Sala at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). Krustev, trained in Europe and the United States, was the chief commercial artist for Better Homes and Gardens magazine. The lecture covers all phases of art training. All are welcome.

Auditions

The Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) holds auditions for the comedy “Cash on Delivery,” written by Michael Cooney and directed by Bob Coull, on Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9, 10 a.m. (sharp). Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. One need not be a member of LLT to audition but must be a member to participate in the play. Memberships will be available at the auditions for just 100 pesos. Season ticket holders are automatically members of LLT.

Coull is looking for four women and six men for performances scheduled April 3-11.

LLT is located in San Antonio Tlayacapan, just off of Allen W. Lloyd Drive. Turn toward the mountain at the stoplight just west of SuperLake Market and drive to the end of the road.

Viva trips

VIVA la Musica! has scheduled several wonderful trips to see the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) perform at Guadalajara’s magnificent Teatro Degollado in the opening months of the year. The first season of 2010 is aptly named “Mexico de Mis Amores” in honor of the Independence bicentennial and Revolution centennial, and will feature a healthy dose of Mexican classical music.

Those taking advantage of Viva’s offer can see JPO musical director Hector Guzman conduct the first program of the season on Friday, January 22, 8:30 p.m. The orchestra will be joined by the choir and soloists of the Guadalajara Cathedral, directed by Aurelio Martinez. The program will feature “Mass” by Mariano Elizaga (a director of the Cathedral choir in the 19th century) and “The New World Symphony” by Dvorak.

The next trip on Friday, January 29 (concert starts 8:30 p.m.) showcases the world premier of M. Lifshitz’s “Homage to Ruben Fuentes.” Guzman conducts a program that also includes Gonzalo Curiel’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” with pianist Silvia Navarrete and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5.”

The third trip will take in the 12:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, February 7. The orchestra will interpret Manuel Ponce’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” and Liszt’s “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2.” Enrique Radillo is the guest conductor and Jorge Federico Osorio the guest pianist.

Radillo leads the fourth program, which features “Homage to Martha Gonzalez de Hernandez Allende” with guitarist Enrique Florez, who will also perform in Barcarisse’s “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.”  This trip takes in the Friday, February 12 performance, starting 8:30 p.m.

Program number five will be a special one for many in the Lakeside community. Joining the orchestra will be soprano Barbara Padilla, who recently finished second in NBC’s popular “America’s Got Talent” show. Padilla was a former student of Harlan Snow and received scholarship funding from Opera Buffs, the forerunner of VIVA la Musica!

The program includes “Pinata” by R.X. Rodriguez, Bartok’s “The Miraculous Mandarin,” “Huapango” by Moncayo and operatic arias and Mexican songs. Curtain time is Friday, February 19, 8:30 p.m.

For the evening performances, the bus leaves Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic at 4:30 p.m. and will stop for a pre-concert (no-host) dinner at a fine Guadalajara restaurant. For matinee performances, the bus leaves at 10:30 a.m. and goes directly to the theater. Tickets for VIVA members are 200 pesos and for non-members are 250 pesos.
