Night in Vienna

Bound to be a great favorite of local music buffs, the upcoming concert sponsored by Ajijic’s Music Appreciation Society (MAS) will present the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday, January 14, 7:30 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta.

The program that evening is titled “Night in Vienna,” and will be filled with the lush sounds of the familiar “Der Fleidermaus” overture and the first movement of Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony.”

Both Strausses, Johann and Richard, will be well represented with the “Blue Danube Waltz,” “the Emperor Waltz,” “Pizzicato Polka” and “The Rose Cavalier.”

Maestro Jose Rolan formed the 60-plus player orchestra in 1915 under the name of the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra. After its administration was passed around to various cultural agencies, it eventually became the child of the Departament de Bellas Artes del Estado de Jalisco in 1971. The name was changed to the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in 1988, in keeping with its new mission of being more a part of the entire state rather than just a local musical entity.

Current Director Hector Guzman picked up the JPO baton in 2004. Guzman, who hails from Fresnillo, Zacatecas, is considered one of Mexico’s finest conductors and is particularly well-known for his discipline and impeccable musicality. Guzman attended the National Conservatory of Mexico, Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas. He has conducted orchestras throughout the United States, Mexico and in Europe.

Tickets for the concert cost 350 pesos and go on sale January 4 at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) Tickets, Etc. booth and Charter Club Tours.

La Bodega Restaurant at Calle 16 de Septiembre 124 in Ajijic will present dinner shows featuring the superb Female Mariachi Tecalitlan on Tuesdays, January 12 and January 26. Tickets cost 220 pesos. Call 766-1002 for reservations.

The Mime show

VIVA la Musica! is excited about their revival of the “Mime Show,” that was a major source of entertainment and a major fundraiser at Lakeside for many years. This version, “Wink, Wink, (Lip Synch),” a return to the music of the 50s and 60, will be directed by Roseann Wilshere and Jayme Littlejohn. The music will include some favorites like “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and the Comets, “Sugartime” by the McGuire Sisters, “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones and a whole bunch of others that will bring back the best memories ever.

The cast will include community members who will be outdoing themselves, including Elizabeth Cathcart, Heather Altmire, Rosemary Keeling, Monica Molloy, Maxcine Tate, Kristine Moily, Darius Moily, Michael Warren, Patrick Winn, Roberta Hilleman, Don Chaloner, Damyn Young, Liliana Barker, Denae Dobko, Meagan Taylor, Georgette Richmond, Diane Pretti, Kim Everest, Pat Carroll, Beverly Denton, Peter Denton, Jim Collums, Tom Gladney, Lorna Gladney, Mike Campo, Suzanne Forrest, Tim Welch and Caroline McCormack.

The show is scheduled for Friday, January 15. 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 17, 4 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta.

Tickets will be on sale at the Lake Chapala Society from January 4 though January 15 and will cost 150 pesos (center section) or 120 pesos (side sections). Proceeds will go to support VIVA’s scholarship fund and for improvements to the auditorium.

Wilshere says she is still looking for background dancers for the Mime Show (jitterbug, mostly). Contact her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Muralist talks

Artist Javier Zaragoza will address the meeting of the Ajijic Society of the Arts January 4, discussing the completion of his mural near Chapala on the Chapala-Jocotepec highway.

Sad

The rooster owned by Lakeside photographer Xill Fessenden known as “Pito Real” or “Pituk” has passed away from an injury suffered when he was kicked. Pituk was found wandering the streets of Ajijic when he was a little chick, about five and a half years ago, after he had escaped from the fryer truck. He became famous in the village for his presence in Fessenden’s studio and often greeted patrons, especially women with painted toe-nails wearing sandals. He indicated by doing a special dance which of Fessenden’s photos he preferred. He was selected three years ago as the poster-bird for the anti-Avian flu epidemic and his image was seen around the world.

He will be missed by his many friends around Lakeside.

Combo

An interesting exhibit featuring photographs by Luis Mancera McCormick and Jill Flyer, along with “a world of texture” by painter Rick Present, opens Friday, January 8, 4-7 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the village’s principal plaza. Refreshments will be served.
