Minimalist humor
The Naked Stage has announced play readings of works by comic genius Woody Allen. The production, entitled “An Afternoon with Woody Allen,” takes to the naked stage at Zaragoza 3A in Ajijic on January 29, 30 and 31 at 3 p.m. The little-known works have no record of ever having been produced before – probably because they were written as “readings,” which, with a happy irony, makes them ideal for the Naked Stage.
Not everyone believes Allen is a true genius, and if you don’t, this may not be your cup of tea. However, if you’re a fan of the zaney machinations of the brilliant neurotic, you’re going to love it.
In the meantime, the Naked Stage is showing “X-Mas Turkeys with Hams,” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 18, 19 and 20 at 3 p.m.
The ticket donation is 50 pesos. There is a no-host bar and reservations are required. This work is not suitable for children.

Mexican artists
More than 20 artists and artisans who are members of Expo Chapala Artesnal (ECA) will be on Ajijic’s principal plaza to show examples of their particular artistic pursuits on Friday and Saturday, December 18 and 19, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. ECA, the brain child of Chapala Municipal President Gerardo Degollado, is a group of Mexican artists that puts on two expositions a year and also joins in the Maestros del Arte event.
Their works include paintings, sculpture, clay art, jewelry, textiles and more. It’s really something to see. Be sure to set aside some time from your busy schedule to visit the show.
New digs
“Quattro” means “four” in Italian and is the name of a new gallery and storefront to open soon at Colon 9 in Ajijic. It’s appropriate because four friends, who have known each other for several years, have linked up to provide an array of professional services as well as a photographic gallery.
Luis Mancera McCormick and Jill Flyer are well-known photographers in Ajijic, the United States and other parts of Mexico. They have joined forces for multiple photography shows to be held this year and next at Quattro. They will also offer many services, such as photos for advertisements and websites, as well as photography and Photoshop classes. Mancera will continue his work as a printer and graphic designer for many of the local artists and Flyer will carry on with her popular photo/workshop tours of the Lakeside area and Guadalajara. Eventually, she says she will also offer her popular French classes at this location.
Juan Eufrancio Marquez Flores will bring his legal and immigration services (residency and working papers, etcetera.) and his assistance in obtaining Mexican National Health Insurance (IMSS) for foreigners. Marquez’s current clients will be happy to know that he will still retain his other location at the offices of Robles, Loridans and Montoya.
The fourth service offered at Quattro will be Chapala Web Creations, which publishes the Ajijic News on line.
Visit Quattro at Colon 9 in Ajijic or call (376) 766-3589. Check out the website at www.QuattroAjijic.com.
Photo contest
Last year’s community photo contest was so popular that photographers Flyer and Mancera have decided to do it again and Maria Di Paola has graciously agreed to be one of the judges.
The theme this year is La Vida en Chapala (Life in Chapala) - whatever that means to the photographer. It can be Mexican life or expatriate life, it can be poor or rich life, it can be the towns and the plazas or the neighborhood tienditas or bars. Whatever the photographer thinks symbolizes life in the municipality of Chapala (includes Ajijic, San Antonio and Riberas del Pilar).
There will be three categories: Professional, Amateur and Student. The entry fees are quite low (80 pesos for professionals, 50 pesos for amateurs and 40 pesos for students). Photographers can pick up entry forms and all the specifics as of Wednesday, December 23 at Quattro, the new gallery at Colon 9 in Ajijic.
All entries are due at Quattro by February 1.
One of the grand prizes for first-place winners in each category is to be part of a photo spread of the winners and their winning entries in the Guadalajara Reporter. Further, all winners and honorable mentions will be invited to exhibit (and sell) their photos at Quattro for the entire month of March.
For more information contact Flyer at 766-3025.
Photographic
A small photographic exhibition of framed works by Libby Townsend will be staged in Ajijic’s smallest gallery (the Guadalajara Reporter office at Plaza Bugambilias) on Friday, December 18, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The collection features scenes from Townsend’s travels and life in Latin America and is entitled “A Love Affair.” The photos, in color and from interesting perspectives are all un-manipulated. The prices are fair and the photos will fit in a suitcase or carry-on. Look for refreshments.
If you miss the opening, be sure to stop in on Saturday, December 19 or Sunday, December 20, when businesses in Plaza Bugambillias will be open to celebrate the holidays. Looks for some great bargains, including on-line subscriptions to the Guadalajara Reporter for 50 percent off and discounted Christmas cards for publication in the Reporter.
